About the Prints
What is a giclée print?
Giclée (French for "to spray") is a high-quality inkjet printing process using archival pigment inks on fine art paper. The result is a museum-quality print with exceptional colour accuracy and longevity – prints made this way are designed to last over 100 years without fading. All Dex's giclée prints are produced on 315gsm museum-grade fine art paper and are made from original digital art.
What is a screenprint?
Screenprinting is a traditional printmaking process in which ink is pushed through a mesh screen onto paper, one colour at a time. Each print is pulled by hand, meaning every edition has a subtle variation that makes each one unique. Dex's screenprints are produced on heavyweight fine art paper, signed and numbered by hand.
What is a stencil and spray paint print?
These are entirely hand-made originals. Dex cuts stencils and applies spray paint by hand, meaning no two prints are identical. Each one is a genuinely unique piece of art – not a reproduction – in a very small edition.
What's the difference between a giclée and a screenprint?
Giclée prints are produced digitally using archival inkjet printers, allowing for highly detailed, colour-rich results. Screenprints are made by hand using the traditional printmaking process, giving them a slightly different texture and finish. Both are produced on fine art paper and signed and numbered by the artist. Neither is better – they suit different work.
What paper do you use?
Giclée prints are produced on 315gsm museum-grade fine art archival paper. Screenprints vary by edition – details are listed on each individual product page, but normally paper sourced from leading paper mills like GF Smith.
Are the prints signed?
Yes. Every print is signed and numbered by Dex.
What does limited edition mean?
Each print is produced in a fixed, numbered edition. Once they're gone, they're gone. Edition sizes vary from as few as 10 to a maximum of 100, depending on the piece. The edition size and your print's individual number are both noted on your Certificate of Authenticity.
What is an Artist's Proof (A/P)?
An Artist's Proof is a print from outside the main numbered edition, traditionally reserved for the artist. They are marked "A/P" rather than with an edition number, and are produced in very small quantities – typically no more than 10% of the main edition size. Artist's Proofs are considered desirable by collectors as they are rarer than the standard edition. When available, Dex's Artist's Proofs are listed separately in the shop.
How do I know mine is authentic?
Every print comes with a stamped Certificate of Authenticity confirming the edition size and your print's individual number. Dex signs every certificate personally.
Buying and Framing
What size frame do I need?
Most of our prints are sized to fit standard off-the-shelf frames. The exact size of each print is listed on its product page. That said, we'd always recommend getting your print professionally framed – a good framer will advise on mounts and apertures and make a real difference to how it looks on the wall. Drop us a line if you need any advice.
